The Social Security Appeals Tribunal (SSAT) was established by Ministerial Instruction in 1975 and by legislation in 1988. Its existence was continued by the Social Security (Administration) Act 1999. The SSAT provides independent merits review of decisions made under the Social Security Act 1991, Social Security (Administration) Act 1999, A New Tax System (Family Assistance) Act 1999, A New Tax System (Family Assistance) (Administration) Act 1999, Paid Parental Leave Act 2010, Student Assistance Act 1973, and Farm Household Support Act 1992.
